How soccer protests are creating political turmoil

Soccer protests have taken on many forms in recent years. Megan Rapinoe, who kneeled during the 2016 national anthem, started a movement that led to other protests against racism in sport and society. In February, the United States team declared that no player would continue to kneel during the national anthem. The U.S. team stood before the anthem in a match against Sweden. Others on the field sat down.

Canada Soccer's inability expressly to support soccer protests

Canada Soccer's lack of explicit support for the soccer protests has led to a series of questions. For example, what's Canada Soccer's position on the need for greater transparency in the organization's funding and recruitment processes? Are they willing to pay their players equally? Does it want equal compensation for men and women?

As a sign of anti-racism, you can kneel.

Many soccer fans are now questioning the purpose of the knee. Some have praised the movement, while others feel it is politically motivated. The protests have been supported by the UEFA, soccer federations and other organizations, presumably to show that soccer is progressive and inclusive. But, it seems like the movement has become more about self promotion than actual action against racism.

Taking the knee in England

An English football player protested the practice, causing a political storm. Conservative politicians attacked the protest, claiming it was a political statement. Black Lives Matter supporters say it's a way to show their support. Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, has stated that such gestures should be allowed provided people are free to express their opinions.

Hungary: Kneeling in Hungary

While some England players have taken to the ground to protest racial injustices during soccer games, supporters of Hungary's national team have refused to do this in their games. The team has been booed by some supporters in Hungary, as well. While it is unclear as to why the players protested this way, Hungarian fans showed strong reactions to the protest.

Colombians are taught to kneel

Colombian protestors are not the first to kneel. They have been calling attention to the lack of support they received from the national team, who are almost all Black. Instead of expressing their solidarity, the players have been posting anodyne messages on social media.

FIFA 19: The kneeling position

Taking the knee is a controversial move in football, but it is a part of modern football. It was used frequently in the Premier League this year, and even at the Euros. FIFA should pay attention to this trend and incorporate it into their game.
