Jill Ellis established a mentoring program to support the next generation women soccer coaches. She is also the president and founder of the San Diego Wave FC franchise. This team is the newest in NWSL. She will share her insights and expertise on building a community and motivating people to work towards a common goal.


Ellis has spent the past year working tirelessly to develop the program as well as solicit donations. She will raise money to fund promising female coaches who otherwise would not be able to afford costly licensing programs. The women will be assigned mentors who will provide advice and help build their professional networks. In its first year, the program will sponsor approximately three dozen women.

She has been offered several coaching positions and hopes to see more women in leadership roles in pro sports. Jill Ellis was born into a country in which girls were not allowed to play competitive soccer. Her mother, Margaret, was against her daughter's participation in the sport. At that time, it was considered unladylike to play soccer. She moved to Virginia when she was 17 to play soccer, and she also led her high school soccer team towards a state championship.

Jill Ellis has been a coach for more than 20 years and has earned a USSF Pro coaching licence. She began her career at a young age, playing soccer for Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax, Virginia. Later, she won the Under-21 Championship and the state championship with her local team, Braddock Road bluebelles. She also played college soccer at William and Mary University and was named an All-American. Ellis earned her awards as a coach even though her playing days were during her early twenties.

Ellis has extensive expertise in management of sports, and she is an experienced coach. Ellis has held many leadership positions, including that of the Development Director of the United States Soccer Federation. She was also an assistant coach for U.S. women’s national team, and coached women's youth soccer teams. Ellis was appointed interim coach of the senior women’s national team in 2012 She was an interim coach for 2 matches in 2014 and holds a USSF Pro coaching certificate.
