The U.S.'s final equalizer for women's soccer was one of most memorable moments of this tournament. Abby Wambach was able to score a crucial goal with a header that was both precise and decisive, although it wasn’t the game-winning goal. This goal will live in the US's history of women's soccer.
Morgan's future as a star player
Alex Morgan is one of the top young players in the US women's soccer league. This season, she scored 15 goals in 16 NWSL league games. She will be leading the U.S. team in Mexico to the Concacaf tournament this summer. The US had not participated in this tournament since 2010 in Cancun. Morgan was instrumental in helping the Americans win gold at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011. Although the team lost to Mexico, Morgan also helped them reach the semifinals. She also scored the winning goal in the London Olympics against Canada.
Rapinoe's suit against the U.S. soccer Federation
Five members of USWNT filed a lawsuit in April 2016 against the U.S. soccer association seeking equal pay for their work. They claimed they had been unfairly treated due to their gender. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission received the complaint. A federal judge sided strongly with the Federation in May 2020, dismissing the vast majority of players' unpaid wages. On appeal, the women filed a briefing in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Dunn's first Olympics
Dunn's inclusion in the U.S. women’s soccer team was highly anticipated and celebrated in Rockville Centre, Maryland earlier this month. It marked the end for her World Cup absence as well as the beginning of a new chapter in her soccer life.
Rapinoe's 3rd Olympics
Megan Rapinoe, a forward for USA national team. In 2009, she returned to the team and was part of their first World Cup. Rapinoe handed the ball to Abby Wambach, her teammate, in 2011 just before the match was over. In 2012, she was part Olympic team and helped to win the bronze medal in London.
Team USA's performance in Tokyo
Team USA's performance during the Summer Games has been positive. The Tokyo Olympic basketball team won gold. The women’s volleyball team won their first Olympic gold. In addition, the 4x400 meter relay women’s team brought home their first gold. Allyson Felix has now won 11 career medals, and the U.S. women’s track and field team won its first indoor volleyball gold.
