The new women's soccer team is owned by former Olympian Abby Wambach, who was a Rochester native before becoming a star on the world stage. Wambach was a founder investor and is the first woman to own a majority of the NWSL. Investment in women's soccer
The recent investment in the development of women's soccer is a welcome change. A quarter of FIFA member organizations do not have a senior women’s national soccer team. These include even Pakistan, which had never played competitive soccer prior to the 2015 Women's World Cup. Mauritania, which has invested more than $100,000 in women's soccer since 2016, has played its first official matches in Spain in July.
