Despite her upbringing in the United States, Gu Jianlin, a female Chinese-American athlete, made the decision to represent her mother's country, China, at the Olympic games. Her decision surprised many Americans, especially because it was a time of tension between the two countries. Many even called her traitor. The choice to represent her mother's country was an unpopular one, and society treated her differently than if she had remained in the United States.
Feminism
This study aims to explore the prevalence of feminist ideologies in women's athletic advertising. Although the sample is very small, it may provide insight about the female athlete audience and the role that feminism plays in marketing athletic products. It may inspire further research. A larger sample size could yield stronger conclusions. Additional research could help us understand the relationship of feminism to athletic values.
Size
The beauty and strength of Asian female athletes is often the focus of news reports. This kind of commentary has been a consistent feature in Asian-American Olympics coverage. Despite this stereotype, Asian-American athletes are also great in many other sports.
Fragility
Asian American women have been making their way to the Olympics, and they've been scrutinized by fans and the national team. Zhu Yi has been mocked recently for falling during a team event. Zhu gave her American citizenship and competed for China. She "stole” the place from a Chinese athlete.
Color
It is not easy to find Asian women athletes in sports. Though most female athletes in the US and most Asian countries are white, there are some Asian women who have achieved greatness in sports. Chinese athletes have been the most successful in sports that are dominated by non-Asians. But there are also several Asian women who have been unlucky, despite their extraordinary talent and drive.
Status
Asian female Olympic athletes are becoming more visible. Many of them double up as role models or diplomats, speaking out against injustices in their professional and private lives. Seven outstanding Asian women athletes are featured in Vogue Singapore's latest issue.
Race
Stereotypes regarding race have been around for a long time, particularly in competitive sports. Particularly, Asian athletes were portrayed as weak, fragile, and biologically inept for modern sports. Despite this, Asian female athletes are well-known and covered in news stories. The stories often address the athletes' physical strength and psychological characteristics.
